In response to Mariah's questions on torture in hollywood

Do you think the movie industry plays with the emotions that people get from torture and other gruesome acts and puts those situations in the movies just for such reactions?

I absolutely agree that the movie industry does this. They know that people enjoy being scared because they get a thrill without actually being in any danger. Movies like Saw are gruesome and yet people go and see them because they enjoy it. I have never seen any of those movies, for obvious reasons. I think I would throw up watching them! I do know people who have not missed one of the movies in the series. Hollywood knows that people like to be shocked and so they basically have free reign over anything they want to put into a movie. They can add all sorts of blood, guts, monsters, killers..anything really and they will have people rushing to the theater to see it. I am not a fan of horror movies, I am more into thrillers that leave the blood and guts behind.  I love being scared when it comes to creepy music and things pooping out and making me jump. Seeing someone cut to pieces is not enjoyable scary for me, it's just gross and disturbing. Many people love this, we talked about this in class a few classes back. We wondering what it is that makes people crave that feeling of being terrified. People go to all lengths for these feelings; roller coasters, bungy jumping, haunted houses, sky diving, all of these give people a rush of adrenaline. People will always be searching for new ways to get this feeling.

Question: Have you ever done anything extreme such as sky diving to experience that feeling?

  1. When I first read this question I thought no but I wish I had the guts too but the more I thought about it I have done a couple things that some people might feel is extreme. I have been parasailing in Hawaii over the ocean and I was actually dipped in the ocean before I was brought in. It was the most amazing feeling, I can’t even describe it but I would definitely do it again. The other thing I did was the free fall thing at the Great Escape and I was the person who pulled the rip cord. At first I didn’t know how to act and I didn’t know how I felt so I closed my eyes and I screamed but then I realized that I was fine. This as well was an awesome experience, I kind of felt like a bird, and I would definitely do this again as well. I have also wondered about how much higher or how much bigger of a drop I could handle.

    Question:

Why do we feel we need to do something extreme within our life time? Why do we make “Bucket Lists”??
